Alessandro Preziosi brings to the stage Tommaso Mattei’s Waiting for King Lear, the story of the king and his three daughters, based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy. The play, directed and performed by Alessandro Preziosi as King Lear, had its national premiere on July 9 in Naples, as part of the Campania Teatro Festival, and will soon be performed at the Teatro Romano in Verona (July 20-21), Teatro Goldoni in Venice (Nov. 2-5), Teatro Comunale in Vicenza (Nov. 21-22) and Teatro del Monaco in Treviso (Nov. 23-26).
Accompanying the actors on stage are some of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s works, props to narrate the relationship between fathers and sons, the relationship between tradition and innovation, between man and nature. Chance is the originator of the encounter between Michelangelo Pistoletto and Alessandro Preziosi. “Chance is the combinatorial element on which everything that has life depends, the life we see reflected in the mirror. By pausing to reflect in front of the work we realize that Chaos is the only possible order” (Michelangelo Pistoletto).
The collaboration with Michelangelo Pistoletto extends to his foundation, Cittadellarte, and includes not only the “works on stage” but also the creation of the “dresses on stage,” iconic costumes designed by the Fashion B.E.S.T. collective made through a traceable and ethical transparent textile supply chain and using sustainable processes and materials, with the creative and artistic direction of Olga Pirazzi, Flavia La Rocca and Tiziano Guardini. The garments are made using Candiani Denim and COREVA™, the first all-natural and circular stretch denim, dyed with Recycrom™, a technology that uses pre- or post-consumer waste, and lasered by Officina+39.
The show produced by PATO and the Teatro Stabile del Veneto - Teatro Nazionale features artistic supervision by Alessandro Maggi, original music by Giacomo Vezzani, and in addition to Alessandro Preziosi as Lear, features Nando Paone as Gloster, Roberto Manzi as Kent, Federica Fresco in the dual role of Cordelia and the Fool, and Valerio Ameli as Edgar.
