Last day of shooting in Rome of the Rai event series dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, produced by Matilde and Luca Bernabei’s Lux Vide in collaboration with Rai Fiction, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Big Light Production in association with France Telévisions and RTVE. It was the first major international co-production to resume filming after being halted due to the health emergency.
The filming involved about 500 personnel; more than 1,900 hours were worked, 3,000 extras and 2,500 costumes used. The Renaissance-era cities of Florence and Milan were reconstructed near Lux Vide’s studios in Formello (Rome): about 20,000 square meters of surface area that required five months of planning and more than twenty-two weeks of filming.
A never-before-seen clip, accompanied by John Paesano’s music, has appeared online, showing the studio of the Tuscan genius. Playing Leonardo will be Aidan Turner, an Irish actor and voice actor who has played several roles: most famously, Captain Ross Poldark in the TV series Poldark, the vampire John Mitchell in the Being Human series, and Kili in the film saga The Hobbit.
The cast includes Giancarlo Giannini as Andrea del Verrocchio; Matilda De Angelis who plays Caterina da Cremona; Freddie Highmore is Stefano Giraldi, a young investigator for the Podestà charged with solving the mystery at the center of the story; Carlos Cuevas is Salaì, Leonardo’s apprentice and trusted friend; and playing the role of Ludovico il Moro is James D’Arcy.
