A new season of Art Night, the public service’s cultural network container entirely dedicated to art, a program by Silvia De Felice and Emanuela Avallone, Massimo Favia, and Alessandro Rossi, directed by Andrea Montemaggiori, starts next week on Rai 5 . The new season comes with some new features, starting with the broadcasting day, which, instead of Friday as in past seasons, will be Wednesday: the first episode will be Dec. 14 at 9:15 p.m. on Rai 5.
Each week, with the guidance of Neri Marcorè, confirmed to lead the program, Art Night will move between Titian’s painting and Tina Modotti’s photography, Banksy’s graffiti and Venus de Milo, to discover that art is a lens that allows us to look at the world from many different perspectives: light and deep, ironic and dramatic through everything that feeds our imagination. A journey into art that is also a journey into our soul.
The first episode will be dedicated to architect and designer Achille Castiglioni, on the 20th anniversary of his death, with the documentary Achille Castiglioni. All with a nothing by Valeria Parisi produced by 3D productions. Irony, self-criticism, curiosity, and interest in others are some of the characteristics that make Achille Castiglioni one of the greats of Italian design, designer of 20th century icons. His Arco lamp, from 1962 is, to this day, the most famous and copied piece of furniture in the world. It means it works, Castiglioni said.
Surrounded by his objects and, above all, an astonishing amount of toys collected throughout a lifetime, Castiglioni tells his story with generosity and humor. What is surprising is his eagerness to critically observe reality, to find novel solutions, to surprise and amaze us. We see him with amused and laughing eyes as he explains why he collected empty cans, ball-top bottles, springs, and children’s plastic glasses. The documentary then takes the audience on one of the many guided tours of the Foundation following his daughter Giovanna as she illustrates her father’s ever-present work.
But it will not only be Giovanna Castiglioni who will talk about Achille to the Rai 5 audience. Others include architect Patricia Urquiola, his student at the Milan Polytechnic, who is engaged in the preparation of the celebratory exhibition at the Triennale. And it is precisely the images of this exhibition that tell us about a designer who never created schools but ferried us to the new millennium.
