Kleiner Fug, a Florentine comic book and graphic novel publisher specializing in biographies of famous artists and historical figures as well as literary adaptations, has produced a graphic novel dedicated precisely to the Urbino artist. The comic book, titled Raphael, was written and drawn by Alessandro Bacchetta and will be part of the selection of themed titles in the bookshop of the Scuderie del Quirinale, where the maxi exhibition Raphael 1520 - 1483 is underway until August 30, 2020.
Starting with the news of the artist’s death, the comic traces Sanzio’s life and artistic activity through the memories of three people close to him.
The graphic novel was first published in 2015, has been reprinted several times and is available in three languages: Italian, English and French.
Following is the synopsis: Rome, April 6, 1520, Palazzo Caprini. Raphael dies suddenly, from a flu contracted a few days earlier; the Transfiguration, now completed, is placed at the back of the room. Agostino Chigi, his Roman patron and friend, has Margherita Luti, Raphael’s lover/fiancée, directly notified by the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi, dear to both of them. He personally writes the news to Michelangelo and Sebastiano del Piombo, while ordering letters to be sent to the family and others indicated by the painter before his death. He then goes in person to notify the pope.
