The Municipality of Brescia and the Brescia Musei Foundation unveiled yesterday, July 20, asite-specific work by artist Zehra Dogan dedicated to the city of Brescia’s resistance to the Coronavirus, which the artist herself wanted to donate to the Brescia Musei Foundation. Stuck in Geneva by the health emergency lockdown and thus unable to create a mural directly in Brescia, Zehra Dogan sent a digital work printed on a 130-square-meter surface to decorate a monumental overlook on Piazza del Foro.
In the work, the artist portrays herself in the guise of a nurse as she struggles against Covid-19 using a phonendoscope as a sling (a gesture that refers to the biblical clash between David and Goliath); alongside the protagonist, the first verses of Bella ciao are read, juxtaposing the theme of the fight against the pandemic with the values of resistance, for which Brescia is awarded the Silver Medal, and in general with the themes of wars of liberation. These themes are central to Zehra’s artistic research, his political commitment and his human story. The work will remain on display at least until September.
The large installation as a gift to Fondazione Brescia Musei crowns the partnership between the Kurdish artist and journalist and the city of Brescia, which began with the exhibition We Will Also Have Better Days - Zehra Dogan. Works from Turkish Prisons, held from November 16, 2019 to March 8, 2020 at the Santa Giulia Museum and opened during the Festival of Peace.
