Venice, hands on Ca' Sagredo. It is the sculpture of Lorenzo Quinn

Venice: two giant hands on Ca' Sagredo. It is Support, the monumental sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn that will be on display for the duration of the Biennale.

Two giant hands arrive in Venice to support the façade of Palazzo Morosini Sagredo, also known as Ca’ Sagredo, the ancient palace home of one of the most prominent families of the Venetian patriciate and now home to Hotel Ca’ Sagredo: it is Support, the monumental sculpture by artist Lorenzo Quinn on view from yesterday and for the duration of the Venice Biennale 2017 (through Nov. 26).

“Reflecting on the two sides of human nature, the creative and the destructive, as well as on the ability of humans to interact and create impact on history and the environment,” reads the introduction to Support, "Quinn addresses the ability of humans to create change and re-balance the world around them - environmentally, economically, socially. Support sees Quinn reflecting and addressing these global issues by echoing the meticulous execution and technique of past masters to create a unique and powerful sculpture that will be on display during the 2017 Venice Biennale."

The two large hands emerging from the waters of the Grand Canal are ideally meant to protect and support Ca’ Sagredo: they could at any moment destroy the building, but they also have the power to save it. “Venice,” said Lorenzo Quinn, “is a floating city of art that has inspired culture for centuries, but to continue to do so it needs the support of our and future generations as it is threatened by climate change and degradation.” A sculpture with a very topical meaning, therefore.

Support is promoted by Halcyon Gallery and Ca’ Sagredo Hotel.
