Saype, the artist who paints on grass considered the pioneer of a new movement linking land art and street art, famous worldwide for his giant masterpieces on grass visible only from above, has finished his highest work ever, at 2,300 meters above sea level, in the alpine pastures overlooking Skyway Mont Blanc’s middle station, the Pavillon.
It is titled Une Grande Dame and is an ephemeral work of about 2,500 square meters made of biodegradable materials composed of gypsum, charcoal and casein.
The Woman is the old lady, a grandmother or the little girl in the fresco, but at the same time she is also Nature, magnificent and immense that deserves contemplation for its beauty and purity. At the foot of Mont Blanc, Saype decided to paint an intra-generational message, a passing of the baton, for the hope of a better future. A grandmother with her granddaughter observing Mont Blanc, the mountain and nature, pointing to it. Like a bridge connecting two worlds but where each flows at its own speed.
“Mont Blanc is an iconic and emblematic place,” said the artist, “an environment that is rapidly changing but fragile at the same time that we have a duty to care for. Its magnificence reminds us of how great nature is compared to man.”
The work will remain on the alpine pastures for three weeks. It will be admired from the cabin of the Skyway cable car, which leads to the highest point in Italy, and for a very short time, until the vegetation grows. After then the immense design will be incorporated by the mountain.
