Archaeologists working at the Pietrarossa site near Trevi (province of Perugia) have announced the discovery of an important Roman floor mosaic, one of the largest in the region: fifty square meters of mosaic surface with marine-themed decorations. Probably, according to the hypothesis of the mayor of Trevi, Bernardino Sperandio (who is also an art historian and a profound connoisseur of local history), it could be a sign that in ancient times, in this area, there was a river port on the Clitunno River, which was navigable at the time (so much so that the remains of an ancient emporium have also been found in the vicinity).
The work, made with white, red and pink tesserae obtained from local limestone, most likely dates back to the second century AD, and its discovery comes in the context of some archaeological investigations conducted since 2015 in the territory of Trevi, where other mosaics have already been discovered (including one of eighty square meters, again with marine decorations).
The excavation is being conducted by Donatella Scortecci of the University of Perugia, and the campaigns cost ten thousand euros a year: so far, the excavations have always been financed by the City of Trevi and the company Metelli of Foligno with the use of the Art Bonus. The results so far bode well for the possible future discovery of other works, and the idea is to open the archaeological site to the public, but it will take many more resources than the excavation can currently count on.
“This year also ends with a big surprise,” Pietrarossa excavation managers wrote on the official Facebook page. “We present the largest mosaic discovered so far at our site. As many as 50 square meters of mosaic surface: for Italy, an exceptional scientific discovery; for Umbria, something to be proud of.”
