Two Veronese paintings restored by Venetian Heritage and Bulgari

Presented the two paintings by Paolo Veronese restored by Venetian Heritage and Bulgari. They will be displayed in two exhibitions in Venice and New York.

A conference was held yesterday at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice to present the two paintings by Paolo Veronese that have been restored by Venetian Heritage, an international nonprofit organization with offices in Venice and New York that works to safeguard the artistic and cultural heritage of the Veneto region, with the support of the famous maison Bulgari.

The two canvases depict St. Jerome in the Desert and St. Agatha Visited by St. Peter in Prison, and were painted by Veronese in 1566 at the behest of Francesco degli Alberi, confessor of the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Murano, a building for which the two works were intended (they were later transferred, following the suppression of the convent during Napoleonic rule, to the church of San Pietro Martire, also in Murano, where the canvases can still be found today). The restoration, which was necessary because of the conservation conditions in which the works were located, worked on the frames, which had gaps and lifts, and on the painted surface (the repainting that did not allow the original colors to be appreciated was removed).

The paintings will now be displayed in two exhibitions that aim to present the restored works to the public. They will be held in the two cities that host Venetian Heritage venues. The first exhibition, simply titled Murano Paintings by Paolo Veronese Restored by Venetian Heritage with the Support of Bulgari, will be held at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice and will open on Thursday, May 11 in conjunction with the opening of Biennale Arti Visive. The second exhibition, Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored, will open at the Frick Collection in New York on October 24. The catalog for the Venetian exhibition, published by Marsilio, features several scholarly contributions, is accompanied by high-quality photographs, is in Italian and English, and was fully funded by Bulgari.
