The processional banner of the Resurrection of Christ, painted in Venice between 1542 and 1544 by Titian Vecellio, has been transferred from the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, where it is kept, to the laboratories of theIstituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro in Rome. The banner, painted on both sides with the scenes of the Resurrection and the Last Supper, will undergo restoration work to restore the pictorial surface to its original coloring, which has been dulled due to paint alteration.
The restoration work will be preceded by some scientific investigations aimed at studying the techniques of execution and the state of conservation. Then the actual restoration will be carried out, which will also be open to the public. At the end of the restoration, the work will go back on display at the National Gallery.
In the past, the Institute had restored other works by Titian: the San Domenico in the Galleria Borghese was restored in 1996, the Religion Rescued from Spain in 2002, and the Salome with the Head of the Baptist between 2010 and 2011 (both of the latter two works are part of the collection of the Doria Pamphjli Gallery).
