Titian's only work in Urbino returns to Ducal Palace after restoration

The restoration of the Urbino Standard, Titian's only work in the Marche city, ends: the work now returns to the Ducal Palace.

The only work by Titian (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1490 - Venice, 1576) to be found in the Marche city is finally returning to its museum, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, located in the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino: the Resurrection and theLast Supper, once part of a single processional banner, have in fact seen their restoration completed, conducted in the laboratories of theIstituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro (Iscr) in Rome. Thanks to the restoration, the original colors and frame have been restored to the work, while scientific investigations have made it possible to detect the artist’s regrets, which mainly concern the perspective setting of the figures. The details were unveiled during a conference at the Doge’s Palace, entitled The Restoration of Titian’s Standard. The Truth of Color.

The Stendardo was conceived as an opisthograph object, that is, painted on both sides, and was made in Venice between 1542 and 1544, commissioned by the della Rovere family, who wanted it for the Confraternity of Corpus Christi in Urbino. Soon after its execution in 1545, the two facades were separated and framed, then placed on either side of the altar of the confraternity’s church. Following the suppression of the confraternity, the painting entered the Ducal Palace in 1861. It is a work of great importance because it represents the only surviving evidence in Urbino of the works Titian created for the Della Rovere court (the most famous, the Venus of Urbino, is now preserved in the Uffizi, where it arrived with many other works that were part of the inheritance of Vittoria della Rovere, wife of Grand Duke Ferdinand II de’ Medici and who moved to the banks of the Arno as a child: she married the grand duke in 1634, when she was only 12 years old).
