Thirteen works to be created in the Fiumara d'Arte open-air contemporary art museum. Here is the announcement

The University of Messina is launching a call for thirteen works to be created in the Fiumara d'Arte open-air contemporary art museum.

The Department of Ancient and Modern Civilizations of the University of Messina has announced a competition for artists to design and create thirteen art works of urban, environmental and light design aimed at the regeneration of the Fiumara d’Arte open-air museum of contemporary art.

The works will be created and initially placed in the areas surrounding and next to the existing monumental sculptures: Monument to a Dead Poet by Tano Festa, La Materia Poteva non Esserci by Pietro Consagra, Piramide - 38° Parallelo by Mauro Staccioli, Energia Mediterranea by Antonio Di Palma, Stanza di Barca d’Oro by Hidetoshi Nagasawa, A Curve Thrown Behind Time by Paolo Schiavocampo, Labyrinth of Ariadne by Italo Lanfredini, Arethusa by Piero Dorazio and Graziano Marini, The Way of Beauty by forty artists, belonging to the monumental cycle of Fiumara d’Arte in the Tusa (Messina) district.

The call for entries is aimed at the creation of true belvederes of the soul, temporary installations that are in spiritual and physical alignment with existing works, that refunctionalize what is present and, at the same time, preconstitute the possibility of exporting emotions and artifacts to other places.

The competition is divided into three different thematic sections: Urban design - monumental sculptures; Landscape and environmental design - environmental installations; and Lighting design - monumental light installations. For the first section, works should be inspired by Jerry Spencer’s vision of urban design as the “creation of the theater of public life,” and should inspire visitors’ sense of the contemporary, as well as represent a functional means of gathering and stimulating reflection; for the second section, works should be inspired by the creation of “gardens of knowledge” and belvederes of the soul, recalling the ideal of natural beauty; for the third section, works should be able to create atmosphere and stimulate reflection with monumental value (writings of light in the natural or urban landscape. In addition, augmented reality interpretations that recall the general spirit of the call for entries should be facilitated). The works to be created are divided into two subsections: Junior (open to artists, architects and designers born after December 31, 1979) and Senior (open to well-known master artists, architects and designers, of any age, as well as companies). Each participant may compete individually or in a group.

The works must also be clearly visible both during the day and at night, so the realization is understood to include any light panel or lighting system. Educational interventions should also be envisaged, parallel to the realization of the work: in fact, each site will host students participating in a School of Excellence organized by the University of Messina, and the artists will have to integrate their work with lectures and tutoring phases, for the maximum duration of the time of the execution of the works.

Applications must be submitted by 1 p.m. onMarch 11, 2021.
