The Madonna and Child in Santa Maria del Popolo is by Filippo Rusuti: the signature emerges from restoration

Presented today, Oct. 18, 2018, the restoration and new attribution of the Madonna and Child in Santa Maria del Popolo. The work is by Filippo Rusuti.

The Madonna and Child of Santa Maria del Popolo, the celebrated thirteenth-century work preserved in the Roman church, is by Filippo Rusuti (ca. 1255 - ca. 1325) . The latest restoration of the work has unearthed signature parts that would be referable to the great protagonist of Roman painting in the Middle Ages, together with Jacopo Torriti and Pietro Cavallini one of the three greats of late 13th-century Rome. The all-female restoration was conducted by Consorzio Aureo (Cristina Caldi and Fiammetta Jahier, under the direction of Simonetta Antellini).

At the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo today at 6 p.m. the restoration and new attribution of the painting will be presented in the presence of Edith Gabrielli, Director of the Polo Museale del Lazio, Prefect Angelo Carbone of the Central Directorate for the Administration of the Fondo Edifici di Culto, Francesco Prosperetti, Special Superintendent of Rome, Alessandro Tomei, Professor of Medieval Art History at the University “Gabriele D’Annunzio” of Chieti and Simonetta Antellini, former Special Superintendent of Rome.
