The Dante Alighieri Society supports the unprecedented DivineComedy.Digital project, the first digital platform that brings the Divine Comedy to life in seven centuries of art history. A project that aims to unite art, literature and technology, making the literary and artistic world of the Divine Comedy dialogue for the first time in a single application.
On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, The Visual Agency, an Italian company that deals with data visualization and information design, has conceived and developed divinecomedy.digital, an application that allows users to delve into and discover the entire corpus of artistic works related to and inspired by the Divine Comedy.
Created with the aim of making Italy’s rich cultural heritage and masterpieces more accessible to all, using data visualization as an analytical and exploratory tool, the project received the patronage of the Dante Alighieri Society. It also received the FWA of the day award, an international recognition established in England in the field of web design and awarded by the Favourite Website Award jury.
The divinecomedy.digital website kicks off a virtual journey into the medieval world of Dante’s Comedy through the interactive display of about a thousand masterpieces by artists (from Sandro Botticelli to Joseph Anton Koch) who over the past seven centuries have interpreted in art the more than four hundred scenes described by the Supreme Poet in his Comedy. The bilingual portal (in Italian and English) organized the works through an artificial intelligence algorithm, grouping them into the three Cantiche, finally by individual cantos. Following this order, the user can dwell on individual scenes, analyze the corresponding works in detail, while a narrator voice recites the verses related to that part of the scene.
The user can also report a missing work from a specific scene to the app and consult sources or view other works by the same author.
The site can also be accessed on tablets and mobile, with free and direct access, without any registration.
“The mission of our agency, which specializes in digital humanities methodologies, is to make Italy’s rich cultural heritage and masterpieces more accessible to everyone,” explains Matteo Bonera, creative director of The Visual Agency, “using data visualization as an analytical and exploratory tool, capable of casting a new light on this work of extraordinary complexity and refinement.”
