The latest work by French artist JR has the Eiffel Tower as its protagonist: from Wednesday, May 19, in fact, it is possible to see for a month, until June 17, the large horizontal and vertical photo collage that has been placed on the Trocadéro square.
Thanks to the illusion created by the large trompe-l’oeil, the famous Parisian monument turns out to be right on top of a precipice, making one dizzy: it looks as if a canyon has opened up in the center of the French capital.
Starting with a wooden fence, JR created this monumental optical illusion, the conception of which took two months, and now passersby go to admire the striking and impressive view, the subject of numerous shots from the start.
It was the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Île-de-France (Drac) that proposed JR to install a work in his style on the square to cover the wooden fence installed for restoration work, in agreement with the City of Architecture and Heritage. The artist immediately responded positively to the Palais de Chaillot ’s proposal, and JR’s studio took on the entire project.
The fence will then serve as a support for artistic interventions until September 2022, in collaboration with associations, foundations, and art colleges, as well as the City of Paris.
