Surprise at Medici Chapels: three more months to visit Michelangelo's Secret Room

After careful environmental monitoring, the Medici Chapels give a surprise: extended until the end of June the experimental visit to Michelangelo's secret room.

Florence, three more months to visit Michelangelo ’s secret room at the Medici Chapel Museum. Museums Director General Massimo Osanna, who has taken over as director of the Bargello Museums, has decided to extend by another three months the visit to the room first opened on Nov. 15, 2023 and scheduled to run until March 30. After a monitoring phase, the experimental opening was extended until the end of June 2024.

With the extended opening, visitors will still have access to the artist’s small room containing a series of figure wall drawings, traced with charred wood sticks and sanguine, of various sizes discovered in 1975 by director Paolo Dal Poggetto and attributed by the director to Michelangelo.

According to Dal Poggetto’s thesis, the artist would have used the walls of the small room to sketch out some of his projects including works from the New Sacristy, such as the legs of Giuliano de’ Medici Duke of Nemours, quotations from antiquity, such as the head of the Laocoon, and projects referable to other sculptures and paintings.

The Secret Room is accessible by reservation, to a maximum of four people per accompanied group, up to a limit of 100 people per week.
