Work has begun on the restoration of the preparatory cartoon of the Camposanto Foundation fresco by Galileo Chini (Florence, 1873 - 1956), among the most important and multifaceted Italian artists of the early 20th century, preserved in the Museo di Palazzo Reale along with five others belonging to the same cycle.
The work will be restored thanks to a loan agreement between the Regional Museums Directorate of Tuscany and the Museum of Graphics in Palazzo Lanfranchi, and will then be displayed and presented in the exhibition entitled Tales of Art. Works and Stories from the Pisan Collection, together with the cartoon from the Fondazione della Torre.
The large preparatory drawing was made for the cycle of frescoes in Palazzo Vincenti on Corso Italia, purchased by the Pisa Chamber of Commerce in 1924 to make it its new headquarters. It is a cycle of choral images of great evocative and celebratory impact of Pisa’s civic and artistic glories for which Galileo Chini drew on the most illustrious cycle of frescoes from the medieval period in the city, that of the Camposanto Monumentale.
The decoration of the Council Chamber was entrusted to the artist Chini in March 1928 to illustrate and celebrate the rebirth of the working life of the city of Pisa. The scenes and preparatory cartoons of Pisa Subjected to the Virgin, The Founding of the Camposanto, The Founding of the Tower and The Consecration of Pisa Cathedral were then completed, along with the two Banner Banners, now preserved in the Royal Palace.
The work will undergo in these days a general maintenance intervention, mechanical cleaning of the surface and the wooden frame, and a punctual intervention of consolidation and stopping of the detached or torn parts, particularly near the large lacuna visible in the area adjacent to the lower right corner of the painting. The aesthetic improvement of the old and approximate existing integration will be carried out: the figuration will be reconstructed taking as reference the intact wall painting, made by the same cartoon, present inside Palazzo Vincenti.
