Prato welcomes Gormley's statue on shyness for six months

For six months, Piazza Duomo in Prato will host Shy, Antony Gormley's sculpture dedicated to the most intimate and timid of human emotions.

On display for six months in Prato’s Piazza Duomo will be Antony Gormley ’s (London, 1950) sculpture entitled Shy.

Made of cast iron (3600 kilos) and four meters high, the work references the materials and methods of the Indutrial Revolution. As the title itself suggests, Shy is intended to evoke timidity. "I want to make something that is secure in its presence as a point of reference, but on examination connects with our inner selves and confronts those shyer, quieter human emotions such as tenderness and vulnerability," said the artist, who uses dimension to activate space and invite those who are part of it to become aware of their position, constantly moving in space and time.

Gormley has placed at the center of his artistic research the relationship between the body, as the seat of the mind, and the architectural or natural spaces with which it relates. He pays particular attention to the placement of his art in accessible public spaces. He has always insisted that the silence and stillness of sculpture are its strongest qualities, allowing it to be open to all our thoughts and feelings. Gormley’s project seeks to acknowledge and catalyze subjective experience. There is both empathy and humor in this work, with which the artist wishes to reanimate the potential of art in the collective realm to celebrate everyday life.

Shy’s installation testifies to the City of Prato’s ongoing commitment to updating its contemporary identity. In addition, the involvement of theAssociazione Arte Continua, established with the aim of connecting the international art community with local communities and enhancing the culture of circularity, forestation and green deal as an engine of change, has developed. Thanks to the collaboration with the Arte Continua Association, the opportunity to install in the center of Prato the work of Antony Gormley, with whom the Association has a strong connection and has carried out public art projects in the past, materialized.
