New discoveries on Modigliani: 2021 exhibition in France will reveal secrets of the artist

For more than two years, the LaM - Lille Métropole Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut has been carrying out, in collaboration with the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France (C2RMF), Chimie ParisTech and the Miniaturization Laboratory for Synthesis, Analysis and Proteomics (MSAP,CNRS / Lille 1), a research project on the paintings and sculptures of Amedeo Modigliani held in French public collections.

The objective is to better understand the artist’s technique through a scientific approach to his works. Some twenty-five paintings and three sculpt ures were involved (including six paintings and one sculpture belonging to the museum itself): studies and analyses such as radiography and X-ray fluorescence were carried out on these.

Surprising new findings, such as the presence of underlying compositions or hidden paintings, invisible to the naked eye, have been discovered from these researches.

In 2021, to celebrate the culmination of this complex and long research project, the LaM will dedicate an exhibition (Feb. 19 to Sept. 19, 2021) to the new discoveries revealed by the latest research on Modigliani’s works. Several meetings are also planned where the artist’s secrets will be revealed and shared with the public; an international symposium will be held on March 17 and 18, 2021.
