On display at MAXXI in Rome are the winners of the first edition of the Piero Siena Preis Prize, aimed at highlighting female artists active in the South Tyrolean territory over the past twenty-five years.

From Saturday, Oct. 1 to Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, the winners of the first edition of the Piero Siena Preis Prize, promoted by theCulture Office of the Province’s Italian Culture Department, are on display at MAXXI in Rome, Italy, which enhances female artists active in the South Tyrolean territory over the past twenty-five years. The Prize will be held every two years and aims to offer new and concrete opportunities to women artists in the South Tyrolean territory, enhancing their creativity and potential. The main objective, however, is to offer access to major cultural institutions. For the 2022 edition, the prize offers the opportunity to enter the collections of a major national museum and other important museums whose activities focus on modern and contemporary art: a perspective aimed at the future of the protagonists of the visual culture of the territory through new forms of public commissioning and promotion of local figurative art outside the territorial boundaries. The official presentation of the winners and works at MAXXI in Rome is scheduled for September 29, 2022.

The first prize was awarded to artist Nicolò Degiorgis whose work, Mare Vostrum, will become part of the MAXXI Collection; second and third prizes were then awarded to Silvia Hell, with the sculpture Voci di Corridoio, and Claudia Corrent, with the series of photographs Neither is the future unfortunately what it used to be. Their works will have access to the permanent collection of Museion - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano. Also awarded with a special mention was the artist Egeon.

The first edition of the Prize made it possible to observe and deepen the artistic landscape of South Tyrol through the analysis of the original and distinctive path of a large group of women artists.

The prize is named after Piero Siena: painter, author, critic, art historian, manager, runner, tireless organizer, and founder of Museion. A personality who was able to leave a deep imprint on South Tyrolean cultural life. His vision and determination were decisive in bringing to life such far-reaching projects as Museion, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano, and in solidly launching its collection. The Prize is thus a tribute to a 20th-century protagonist who made love of art and free thinking the commitment of a lifetime.

“Piero Siena,” stressed Department of Italian Culture director Antonio Lampis, “belonged to that very small group of men whose charisma was transformed into teaching, capable of impacting the lives of those who encountered them-his thirst for understanding never stopped. He was unbeatable in communication, in finding the striking headline, in discovering young talent. Those who worked with him went on to become established, he knew how to target young people with the confidence that he had discovered quality, and he was not wrong.”

“Thanks to this Prize,” added Bart van der Heide, director of Museion, “we have not only a way to strengthen the local art scene, but also to intensify the collaboration between institutions such as MAXXI and Museion. These relationships are important for raising awareness of the value of the South Tyrolean art community on a national and international level.”
