Lorenzo Mattotti has been awarded the prize of Grand Master of Comics, a sort of “Oscar alla Carriera” conferred by Lucca Comics & Games: his self-portrait will thus be added to the exhibition Fumetti nei musei | Gli autoritratti degli Uffizi, curated by Mattia Morandi and Chiara Palmieri and organized as part of the collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, the Uffizi Galleries and Lucca Comics & Games, and will also enter the collection of the Florentine museum. In fact, in the coming weeks it can be admired in the exhibition spaces of the Gabinetto delle Stampe e dei Disegni (Prints and Drawings Cabinet) of the Uffizi. Presenting the Lucca Comics & Games Grand Master of Comics award was the director of the Uffizi Galleries Eike Schmidt, during the official Lucca Comics & Games Awards ceremony.
"With this unprecedented, innovative alliance between the Uffizi and Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important comic book events in the world, the goal is to reiterate a key concept: culture is pop and must effectively reach as many people as possible. The agreement we have entered into is the first of its kind in the world; I am convinced that it will yield great results and lead the way for many other fruitful ’crossovers’ of ideas, creativity and insights for the future," Schmidt commented.
"Today, the Ministry of Culture, the Uffizi Galleries and Lucca Comics & Games have built a true alliance in the name of comics, sanctioned by their presence on the jury in the awarding of the Grand Master of Comics prize at Lucca Comics & Games," added Emanuele Vietina, director general of Lucca Crea. "The definition of Ninth Art is certainly not accidental: in comics we experience the union of visual forms that are always new, different, peculiar and recognizable with a storytelling capable of accompanying the reader in a narrative of words, images and above all ideas."
Lorenzo Mattotti lives and works in Paris. He made his debut in the late 1970s as a comic book author and in the early 1980s he founded the Valvoline group with other illustrators. In 1984 he produced Fuochi, which won major international awards. With Incidenti, Signor Spartaco, Doctor Nefasto, L’uomo alla finestra and many other books up to Stigmate, published in Italy by Einaudi, Mattotti’s work evolves according to a constant of great consistency, but in the eclectic sign of someone who always chooses to try his hand in the new. Today his books and drawings are published all over the world. He also does illustrations for posters, advertising, fashion and design magazines, and has illustrated children’s books such as Eugenio, Grand Prix Bratislava ’93.
