After 70 years, the medical records of Antonio Ligabue (Zurich, 1899 - Gualtieri, 1965), relating to his hospitalization at the San Lazzaro psychiatric hospital in Reggio Emilia, have been made public: in fact, data protection regulations require that at least seventy years must have elapsed since his discharge in order for the data to be made public for historical purposes. Since this deadline has passed since the date of Ligabue’s third and last discharge, the public and fans of the Swiss-born artist will be able to know the text.
For this reason, the Ausl of Reggio Emilia, in collaboration with the Palazzo Magnani Foundation, the Municipality of Gualtieri, the Center for the History of Psychiatry and the Antonio Ligabue Museum Foundation, has promoted two meetings to present the medical record and provide a reading of the text, thanks to the interventions of experts who have studied the artist’s life and works. The first will be held on Sunday, December 2, at Palazzo Magnani, when they will discuss the activities of the San Lazzaro and the wealth of production of artists considered “irregular,” such as Ligabue, that are preserved there. This will be followed by a guided tour of the Palazzo by Giorgio Bedoni, a psychiatrist and professor at the Brera Academy, curator of the section on art brut on display as part of the exhibition Jean Dubuffet. Art in play.
The second will be held in Gualtieri, Ligabue’s adopted city, on Dec. 9, and will focus on the artistic and human figure of Antonio Ligabue, with an in-depth reading of what can emerge from his medical records, in which the artist was registered with the surname Laccabue, or the surname of his stepfather Bonfiglio.
