In Modena, BPER Banca exhibits a portrait of Titian little known to the general public

In Modena BPER Banca is exhibiting on the premises of 'La Galleria' a little-known portrait by Titian depicting the condottiero Gabriele Tadino.

From Friday, May 4, 2018, at La Galleria di BPER Banca in Modena, there is an exhibition of a portrait by Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1488 - Venice, 1576) little known to the general public: it is the Portrait of Commander Gabriele Tadino, formerly part of the collection of the Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara. It is a work made in 1538 that depicts the condottiero Gabriele Tadino (Martinengo, 1476-1469 - Venice, 1543), in three-quarter view as was typical of Titian’s official portraits, while in the background a country landscape opens up and on the wall behind the protagonist we notice the inscription that makes his identity explicit. The right side of the face is in shadow so as not to bring out the fact that Gabriele Tadino is missing an eye, lost due to an arquebus shot that reached him during a clash with the Turkish fleet of Suleiman the Magnificent during the defense of the island of Rhodes, at the time part of the Venetian domains (the island fell into Ottoman hands in 1522). The character wears the typical dress of the Knights Hospitallers, who before moving to Malta maintained their seat in Rhodes itself until the Turkish occupation.

The presentation of the painting is part of the project The Gallery. Collection and Historical Archive of BPER, which, says the bank’s president, Pietro Ferrari, “has succeeded in further strengthening, with a proposal of a high cultural level, the positive relationship that binds our Institute to Modena and its citizens.” With the display of the painting, reads the presentation of the exhibition, “BPER Banca continues its commitment in the cultural sphere, promoting and offering a work of art known to scholars but not yet known to the general public. Enhancement and usability are the values on which this cultural project rests, which aims to make the masterpieces of BPER Bank’s artistic collection known, increasingly developing a mature approach to the management of artistic assets.” The exhibition of Gabriele Tadino’s portrait is accompanied by the release of a study apparatus edited by Lucia Peruzzi.
