The new lighting of the Chapel of the Magi in the Medici Riccardi Palace in Florence was inaugurated today. The intervention cost a total of 20,000 euros and was designed to improve the legibility of the frescoes painted by Benozzo Gozzoli (Scandicci, c. 1420 - Pistoia, 1497) in the 1450s for the Medici family, then owners of the palace.
The project was carried out by the company Linealight and achieved the result of obtaining a more real perception of colors and a renewed livability of the museum space: it was especially on these two fronts that the old lighting, dating back to the 1990s, presented the greatest criticalities. Criticalities that did not allow a homogeneous reading of the frescoes, as well as the preservation of the pictorial works themselves. The old halogen sources, in fact, led to overheating of the environment with inconvenience for visitors and especially for the protection of the frescoes and wooden furnishings, not to mention the invasive arrangement of lamps and bollards, which partially obstructed the vision of the paintings and did not allow access in the scarsella and the vision of the frescoes on its walls.
The new lighting was realized thanks to the Culture and Historical and Artistic Building Heritage Maintenance and Enhancement Department, and in collaboration with the Superintendence of Florence: the project represents a stage in a broader program of renovation and enhancement of the Palace’s heritage, which the Metropolitan City is also carrying out thanks to the support of MUS.E. On this occasion, moreover, the Gift Card of Palazzo Medici Riccardi was also launched, which will allow people to give friends and relatives an experience in the Museum, accompanied by a professional guide. Valid for two people for six months, the Gift Card will cost €16.00 and can be purchased at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi ticket office (daily, except Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
