Cherry blossom petals created with salt: Motoi Yamamoto's striking installation

At the Setouchi City Art Museum, a striking installation by Motoi Yamamoto creates a white carpet of cherry blossom petals made from salt.

A large and striking installation of cherry blossom petals created with salt: this is the solo exhibition of Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto (Onomichi, 1966), already known for his immense salt installations, on view until May 5, 2021 at the Setouchi City Art Museum (Okayama).

The exhibition entitled Sakura Shibefuru - Falling cherry petals features art installations on the theme of cherry blossoms and two-dimensional works dating back to 1995, the starting point of the artist’s work. In fact, over one hundred thousand cherry blossom petals consisting solely of salt are scattered on the floor. The title of the exhibition Sakurashibefuru refers to a haiku describing late spring: falling cherry blossom petals. The falling red and purple stamens indeed indicate the end of the flowering season, but also a reflection projected into the future, to the new vegetation and the approaching summer.

More than 100 thousand salt petals meticulously created one by one by Yamamoto to give life to a huge white carpet that also takes on an intimate meaning for the artist: “I would like to think of cherry trees in full bloom, thick stems, supple branches and strong roots, which over a long period of time have produced layers of salt petals and countless buds. I want to imprint the precious memories in my heart once again.”
