Kicking off on December 11, 2020, is a series of live streaming events dedicated to Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino: the Municipality of Cento and the Centro Studi Internazionale il Guercino are offering a series of events until February 11, 2021, as part of the annual Autunno Guerciniano festival dedicated to the artist and most illustrious citizen.
The series of meetings is aimed at both citizens and the world of culture, anyone who wants to learn more about the historical period, art and school of Guercino. All appointments will be streamed live on the Facebook page and on the website of the Municipality of Cento.
Opening the new season of meetings will be the conference Le radici ferraresi del Guercino, by art historian Giovanni Sassu, director of the Museums of Ancient Art in Ferrara. The scholar will investigate, on Friday, December 11, at 5:30 p.m., the mysterious beginnings of Guercino’s career, questioning the influence that Ferrara’s figurative culture exerted on the painter.
On Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m., Barbara Ghelfi will curate a lecture on Guercino’s Wall Paintings in Casa Provenzali, reporting on the first results of the diagnostic investigations conducted under her direction by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Bologna - Ravenna campus, on Guercino’s wall paintings in the residence in Cento. She will be joined by restorer Licia Tasini and architect Alberto Ferraresi.
Saturday, January 16, 5:30 p.m. The meetings will continue with the conference Colloqui sul Guercino e la sua scuola. Speakers will include Barbara Ghelfi, Enrico Ghetti, Lorenzo Lorenzini, David Stone and Pasquale Stenta, coordinated by Daniele Benati. The meeting will highlight some particular artistic aspects of Guercino, but will analyze in particular the artistic talents of the students who attended his workshop.
On Saturday, January 30 at 5:30 p.m., the publication Marco Zoppo ingegno sottile - Pittura e Umanesimo tra Padova, Venezia e Bologna by Giacomo Alberto Calogero published by BUP (Bononia University Press) will be presented. The volume aims to pay homage to one of the most important artists of the Renaissance, who was born in Cento and worked in Bologna but grew up artistically first in the Paduan milieu, where he came into contact with the likes of Donatello and Mantegna, and later in Venice, thanks to his encounter with Giovanni Bellini.
The review will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. on an intimate note thanks to a lecture by art historian Francesca Curti, who will present some unpublished letters by Guercino and his workshop. The researcher will offer an unusual glimpse into the life of the master from Cento at the margins of official biographies, tracing unusual traits of his personality.
