It is called Yes! and it is a light bulb, the new work by Maurizio Cattelan (Padua, 1960): the peculiarity is that the light bulb has the artist’s features, and so it is really the case that now Cattelan’s genius will illuminate anyone who buys this object. After the banana that has been making the whole world debate for weeks, now comes a new work-provocation from the Venetian artist.
Launching the object last Jan. 16 was one of Cattelan’s historic landmark galleries, New York’s Marian Goodman Gallery, which put Yes! for sale on its website. And since it is a multiple (it was in fact produced in an edition of 500 pieces, obviously signed and numbered), the cost is relatively low: we are talking about 750 euros (plus shipping) to have Cattelan’s smiling face on your abat-jour. Of course, the figure is not high even for a multiple, but perhaps it could create some problems if the bulb burns out and needs to be replaced.
The LED bulb comes in two versions, 110 volts for the U.S. market and 220 for the European market. Yes! was unveiled at the FOG fair in San Francisco, an event dedicated to artistic design. For those who would like to grab their own Cattelan bulb, the reference is the Marian Goodman Gallery website.
