One can hardly say that Eternity, the work by Maurizio Cattelan inaugurated Monday in Carrara and composed of the creations of the students of the local Academy of Fine Arts who collaborated for the occasion with the great Paduan artist, did not fulfill its functions as a... participatory artwork: the installation was in fact targeted by Turin-based artist and performer Rebor, known in Piedmont for his forays that have led him to scatter shocking pink objects all over the city. On the day of the inauguration, Rebor literally invited himself to be a part of the work: he therefore showed up in Carrara and, partly out of provocation, partly out of fun, hung a funeral poster on the tower of the Malaspina Fortress, the oldest nucleus of the building now home to the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts.
That’s not all: Rebor, disguised as a mortician, also staged a kind of funeral by kneeling in prayer and leaving the competition announcement sheet (in fact, remember that Eternity was attended by artists selected by Maurizio Cattelan as part of an Academy competition) with his signature in front of one of the project’s graves, along with two lit candles and a bouquet of flowers. And the interesting thing is that many thought his action was part of the work. And today, his poster ... is still there!
