According to Carlo Pepi, the now well-known art collector and independent scholar of Amedeo Modigliani, the two works currently on display in Palermo with attribution to the Leghorn master at the Modigliani exhibition would be fake. Les Femmes at Palazzo Bonocore, which opened last Nov. 3. It is an event that combines multimedia projections with the display of two works, Jeanne and Hannelore, ascribed to Modigliani’s hand. According to Pepi, who made national headlines for exposing the presence of forgeries at the major Modigliani exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa in 2017 (later recognized as forgeries even by the expert report filed in court), the works would still be forgeries.
He has talked about this on several occasions on his Facebook account, including posts and comments. In the last one, Pepi spoke out about the two works as follows: “images of two alleged Modigliani have appeared in the ’miraculous’ exhibition in Palermo, and as expected, they are egregious, unacceptable FAKES! And the tragedy continues... ”. Pepi, in a comment, then called out to the art world, “the tragedy is not over, in Palermo it continues. And here are two unacceptable fakes reappearing in the exhibition that are probably meant to finance the exhibition and future Centennial initiatives. We raise our protest chorally, the protest of those who love ART and whose duty it is to defend it. Enough with the bullying of the poor, defenseless Artist!” As yet, no comment from the exhibition organization.
