Renowned architect Santiago Calatrava will produce porcelain works in Capodimonte destined for the Church of San Gennaro in the Real Bosco on the occasion of its upcoming reopening.
The porcelains will be made in collaboration with master ceramists and students from theCaselli-De Sanctis Rare Address Institute, which is based in the Real Bosco of Capodimonte in the building where the historic Porcelain Factory once stood.
The seminars and workshops are linked to the exhibition Santiago Calatrava. In the Light of Naples, curated by Sylvain Bellenger and Robertina Calatrava, running until Jan. 13, 2021.
The Institute’s director, Valter Luca De Bartolomeis, thanked Calatrava for “his generosity toward the students, stressing the importance of the historic porcelain factory also speaking a contemporary language,” and the director of the Capodimonte Museum and Real Bosco Sylvain Bellenger, who highlighted the diplomatic value of porcelain in the 18th century and its role in the creation of the Kingdom of Naples.“ ”The working of porcelain,“ Bellenger added, ”presupposed great technical expertise that can be compared to the role of digitization today, and that is why Charles of Bourbon was so jealous of his Manufacture that he had its molds destroyed and took the workers with him to Spain to create a new Manufacture there at the Buen Retiro."
Regarding the forthcoming reopening of the Church of San Gennaro, the director of the Neapolitan museum headquarters specified that they are “restoring the old organ that will once again resound and the bell whose chimes will announce the opening and closing of the Bosco.”
The works completed by Calatrava with the students will add to the collection of more than six thousand porcelains already in the Capodimonte Museum.
