In the United Kingdom, the result of a survey proposed by Samsung for the launch of a new TV set and submitted to 2,000 British citizens has been released: the objective was to identify what was the favorite artwork of the people across the Channel. The most beloved work thus turned out to be Banksy’s Balloon Girl, a work by the mysterious Bristol-based street artist that appeared in 2002 on a wall in the London suburb of Shoreditch. Banksy’s graffiti was the highest rated of twenty masterpieces selected by a panel, “The Frame National Art Audit,” assembled by the company and composed of art experts and writers.
In second place was a painting by John Constable, The hay wain (“The Hay Wagon”), painted in 1821, while the lowest step on the podium was taken by Jack Vettriano’s The singing butler (“The Singing Valet”) from 1992. The top five is rounded out by William Turner’s The Fighting Téméraire (“The Valiant Téméraire”), from 1839, and Antony Gormley’s sculpture The Angel of the North (“The Angel of the North”), from 1998. Here is the complete list of the 20 works:
