Inside the architectural complex of Tokyo ’s Meiji Kinenkan, a ceremony was held today to award the Praemium Imperiale to the winners of the 2022 edition: Giulio Paolini for painting, Ai Weiwei (China) for sculpture, Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA studio (Japan) for architecture, Krystian Zimerman (Poland/Switzerland) for music, and Wim Wenders (Germany) for theater/cinema.
Awarded for their achievements, their influence on the art world, and their contribution to the world community through their work, the artists received an award of 15 million yen (about 105,000 euros), a diploma, and a medal, presented by Princess Hitachi, consort of Prince Hitachi, Honorary Patron of the Japan Art Association.
During the ceremony, former Council President Lamberto Dini, who chairs the Italian nomination committee for the candidates, said that few artists working today have interrogated the medium and meaning of art as broadly and articulately as Giulio Paolini. “Many of his works,” she added, “are inspired by masterpieces of art history and are created to make the viewer question what he is looking at. His art questions the very nature of art and the role of the artist.”
Paolini is the third Italian in history to win the painting prize. Before him, only Enrico Castellani (2010) and Michelangelo Pistoletto (2013) had succeeded. In the other categories, past winning Italians have been Umberto Mastroianni (sculpture 1989), Arnaldo Pomodoro (sculpture 1990), Giuliano Vangi (sculpture 2002), Mario Merz (sculpture 2003), Cecco Bonanotte (sculpture 2012), and Giuseppe Penone (sculpture 2014), Gae Aulenti (architecture 1991), Renzo Piano (architecture 1995), Luciano Berio (music 1996), Clauio Abbado (music 2003), Maurizio Pollini (music 2010), Riccardo Muti (2018), Federico Fellini (theater-cinema 1990) and Sophia Loren (theater-cinema 2010).
