In the municipality of Latisana, in the province of Udine, archaeological remains referable to a Roman-era building were discovered during maintenance work aimed at mitigating hydraulic risk along the Latisanotta Canal.

The work, conducted by the Consortium of Reclamation of the Friulian Plain and financed by the Civil Protection, was carried out in coordination with archaeological investigations carried out by the company CORA Società Archeologica s.r.l. under the scientific direction of archaeological officer Giorgia Musina for the Friuli Venezia Giulia Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendency.

The discovery of an archaeologically significant area was made possible by conducting preventive investigations that included manual coring, in-depth soundings and surveillance during excavation by mechanical means. Located near an ancient watercourse, the building lies within an area densely occupied in historic times.

A deep stratigraphic investigation was carried out that revealed the remains of a Roman-era building whose precise boundaries are not yet known; the remains revealed at least two rooms. Of the original structures, only the foundations consisting mainly of large fragments of tiles arranged in shear and amphora fragments placed in direct contact with the natural clay substrate are preserved.

The study of the found materials, which are currently stored in the warehouse of the Trieste office of the Superintendency, will allow for circumscribing the dating. Preliminary analysis of the finds, which consist of fragments of amphorae and containers made of coarse, common and gray impasto pottery, and a bronze fibula, suggest that the building was occupied for a long period of time between the early Roman imperial age (1st-2nd cent. AD) to the late antique-medieval period (5th-6th cent. AD). It was probably a building for residential use due to the constant presence of both tableware and kitchen pottery.
