Two ancient anchors of Archaic age found in the sea in front of Syracuse

Important archaeological find in the seas of Sicily: two ancient anchors, dating back to the Archaic period, have in fact been found in the seabed of San Lorenzo (Syracuse).

In Sicily, two ancient stone anchors have been found in the stretch of sea at San Lorenzo beach, not far from Syracuse. The archaeological finds, dating back to the Archaic period, are located not far from each other, at a depth of about 15 meters, near a shoal. What triggered the verification and survey operation, carried out by the Superintendence of the Sea of the Sicilian Region and the Diving Unit of the Guardia di finanza of Messina, was the report of a citizen. Specifically, it is a three-hole anchor, measuring about 70 centimeters, and another of ovoid shape, documented with a three-dimensional photogrammetric survey. The two artifacts will be recovered in the coming days, to be later displayed in a local museum venue.

The intervention was carried out on a marine area of about 250 square meters, which was surveyed and documented in order to verify the presence of additional archaeological finds. A protection operation that saw the two underwater units engaged, with the support of the vedetta V.7007 of the Naval Operations Section of the Guardia di Finanza of Syracuse, which ensured safety at sea during the dives.

“This type of intervention,” says Regional Councillor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, “confirms the importance of collaboration between public agencies and law enforcement agencies in safeguarding cultural heritage. Also of great value is the collaboration of private individuals that, over the years, has casually led to the identification of numerous artifacts, with the only common goal of recovering and enhancing our cultural heritage.”
