Terracina's Roman Theater restored to the city. Found inside it the portrait of Julius Caesar

Restored and returned to the city the Roman Theater of Terracina, a very rare example of an entirely original structure with the same cavea as 2,000 years ago. Among the latest finds from excavations is a portrait of Julius Caesar.

The Roman Theater of Terracina was inaugurated, intact and original: all its constituent elements, all the blocks of the cavea, are those of 2,000 years ago. The structure has been restored, but it has not been reconstructed or contaminated with modern material. The theater was therefore returned to the city on a day of celebration.

After the greeting of the Mayor of Terracina, Francesco Giannetti, and the institutional greetings in the presence of the highest authorities of the Ministry of Culture, the Representatives of the Lazio Region, the Europarliament, and the Mayors of the neighboring municipalities, there was a brief introduction moderated by the Superintendence’s Communications Manager Gilda Iadicicco. Director General of Superintendencies Luigi La Rocca announced from the stage that support from the Ministry will continue in order to continue the works that will allow the full accessibility of the theater. Superintendent Francesco Di Mario then took the floor, reconstructing all the work done and directed by him over the years that has made it possible to bring to light this Theater, a very rare example of an entirely original structure, with the same cavea as 2000 years ago. Thanks also to the work of the CNR, the many people present were able to see images of what has been done over time, how the appearance of the Forum has changed, all documented by a time lapse.

A long history, that of the rebirth of the Roman Theater, starting with the tragic bombing of September 4, 1943, and ending with the present day. On the big screen appeared the head of a statue, one of the last finds unearthed: a portrait of Julius Caesar that faithfully reproduces his face. It is a unique portrait, also considering its excellent state of preservation, which also allowed for a photographic reconstruction of Julius Caesar. The portrait can now be seen in the nearby Capitolium next to those of Livia and Gaius.

The opening concluded with a concert organized by the Fondazione Campus Internazionale di Musica di Latina with the Roma Tre Orchestra that began its performance by singing the Italian Anthem.

“It was a great emotion to return this theater to its City, finally reuniting it with the Forum,” commented Superintendent Francesco Di Mario. “A complex work, with the cavea being restored to its original appearance by repositioning each of the limestone blocks, the seats for spectators, that had been removed over time. An extraordinary Theater for its entirety, which among its many gifts also gave us this unique portrait of Julius Caesar, which will surely be talked about in the world.”

“As a citizen before even as mayor, it was a day that cannot be forgotten. My training as an architect allows me to say, without fear of contradiction, that our Theater is a precious and extraordinary jewel that joins the immense heritage of our City. Seeing this square packed, all united, marks a rebirth that is not only of the Theater but of the entire community,” concluded Terracina Mayor Francesco Giannetti.
