Important archaeological discovery in Sicily, and to be precise in Carcaci, a small hamlet in the municipality of Centuripe. In fact, a prehistoric settlement of national archaeological significance, still to be studied, was discovered near the town. The discovery occurred during an inspection by the mayor of Centuripe, Salvatore La Spina, and some volunteers from associations in the village, in a hilly area of private property near which the Srr Catania province north will build a public landfill of high ecological value.
At present, a cemetery complex has emerged consisting of a system of nine chamber tombs, dug into the rock. Those with a rectangular shape most likely date back to the Iron Age, while those with a circular shape to the Bronze Age. Others, however, are certainly even older. However, it is likely that other ancient evidence of the settlement will emerge: around the cemetery complex much remains to be excavated and, the Municipality of Centuripe points out, the presence of an ancient village is presumed yet to be excavated. Images of the site have already been reported to the superintendence of Enna.
Exempt from special constraints, the area, adjacent to territory belonging to the municipality of Randazzo, is nevertheless crossed by a water infrastructure (which from Ancipa and Pozzillo brings water to the Simeto and to Catania) and several streams. The project affects private lands, mostly organic pastures, in the Quartodanaro and Bauze districts of the administrative island of Spanò, Randazzo’s “exclave” between Bronte, Centuripe, Regalbuto and Troina.
For the mayor of Centuripe, Salvatore La Spina, “the exceptional discovery adds value to the rich archaeological heritage already present in our territory. I find it absurd that such a facility could be conceived and planned without first checking the territory, which is already important, not only from an ecological point of view, but above all from an agricultural and livestock standpoint. More than 500 people live around the area designated for the landfill and thousands of livestock, including sheep and cattle, graze on that land. This is incalculable damage to the area’s economy and agriculture. That still in 2022 we think of landfills in densely agricultural places makes no sense. Ready, therefore, together with neighboring municipalities, ranchers and farmers in the area, to fight against this disfigurement to the environment.”
Below are some pictures of the newly discovered site.
