Sardinia, reopens after four years the hypogeum of San Salvatore di Sinis

Project approved for work to secure and restore the hypogeum and church of San Salvatore di Sinis. The hypogeum of San Salvatore di Sinis will thus reopen after four years of closure.

After four years, theHypogeum of San Salvatore di Sinis reopens: in fact, the project for the works to secure and restore the hypogeum and the church of San Salvatore di Sinis has been approved. Theancient village characterized by the small houses facing the large central square will soon be the subject of an improvement intervention that will affect the historic little church, the hypogeum, the internal alleys and the square itself.

The project will be carried out thanks to funding from the Regional Planning Center and will amount to 580,000 euros.

“We want to ensure a full and complete enjoyment of the heritage and cultural assets of the Archaeological Park of Sinis Terra di Mont’e Prama, which is why we strongly wanted to intervene with a program of works also in San Salvatore, a village that deserves special attention because it is linked to the town of Cabras by a historical relationship of faith and devotion,” said Mont’e Prama Foundation President Anthony Muroni.

The work will be entrusted by March, with the intention of being able to welcome visitors by the peak season not only to the village and the church but, thanks to an agreement with the Superintendency, also to the hypogeum, which will reopen for the first time after four years of closure.

“Today, the state of the monument requires special attention directed at the decorated surfaces, which have been preserved to us also thanks to the maintenance of environmental conditions. We will start with microclimatic monitoring and a series of microstratigraphic analyses that will involve a multidisciplinary team and will allow in the subsequent phases to calibrate restoration interventions with the utmost respect for the hypogeum. We are also reasoning about the potential offered by virtual restoration and videomapping. All these operations will be parallel to the restoration of accessibility and reopening of the hypogeum to the public, which is a top priority,” said Mont’e Prama Foundation director Nadia Canu.
