Sardinia, nuragic site discovered linked to water worship

The site of Su mòlinu 'e s'orcu in the territory of the Municipality of Lei (Nuoro), a still unpublished archaeological area is revealed, according to archaeologists, to be a sacred area ascribable to the Nuragic period dedicated to the worship of water.

Last month saw the start of the cleaning and preliminary research campaign at the site of Su mòlinu ’e s’orcu in the territory of the Municipality of Lei (Nuoro), an asyet undiscovered archaeological area discovered within the municipal forest at an altitude of about 800 meters, thanks to the interest of the municipal administration and the archaeologists of the Musarte Cooperative. The work was carried out by the Municipality of Lei, which commissioned archaeologists Pier Tonio Pinna and Antonella Unali for the field research, under the scientific direction of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio for the provinces of Sassari and Nuoro, with the area official the archaeologist Gianluigi Marras. The initial results of the survey will presumably be a prelude to further investigations, which will be necessary given the importance of the site.

According to archaeologists, "this is asacred area attributable to the Nuragic period dedicated to the worship of water with several structures that develop from a main chamber and appear to partly encompass a natural watercourse." The main chamber is partly built using natural rock, on which parts of tholos roofing are installed. The access to the chamber was enclosed by a wall of perfectly squared ashlars, but few elements remain. Around the access, a wall structure probably delimits the area of the temenos, the sacred enclosure dedicated to rituals.

Several other structures develop around it that may suggest the presence of a definitely extensive sanctuary.

“The site of Su mòlinu ’e s’orcu, unique in its kind, fits into the broader panorama of cultic structures related to the Nuragic religion, which is expressed through a wide variety of architectural solutions,” state Pinna and Unali. "A new piece for the study of the Nuragic period in Sardinia, which will surely provide new data in the future for the understanding of this important period of Sardinian history."
