Rome, remains found that can be identified with Nero's theater

After more than two years of archaeological investigation, remains of Agrippina's Horti have been found in the inner courtyard of the Palazzo della Rovere in Rome, including structures that can be identified with Nero's Theater, known from ancient sources but never found.

In Rome, in the inner courtyard of Palazzo della Rovere, after more than two years of archaeological investigation, the remains of the Horti di Agrippina, including structures identifiable with Nero’s Theater, have come to light.

The field research was conducted by the Special Superintendence of Rome and has returned anarticulated stratigraphy, ranging from the late Republican age to the 15th century.

“This is a discovery of exceptional importance,” explains Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome, “which would testify to an extraordinary building of the Julio-Claudian age, the theater where Nero rehearsed his poetic and singing performances, known from ancient sources but never found. Also of great interest are medieval and modern finds, which enrich historical and topographical knowledge about the evolution of an important area of the city. Excellent scientific results achieved thanks to the fruitful cooperation with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.”

The excavation, started two years ago under the scientific direction of Renato Sebastiani and then Alessio De Cristofaro, archaeologists of the Superintendency, was conducted in the field by archaeologist Marzia Di Mento. The remains that have come to light concern the left part of the hemicycle cavea, sumptuous finely worked columns of fine marble, refined stucco decorations with gold leaf, and service rooms, perhaps storerooms for costumes and stage sets. All of these elements, together with the high technique of construction and the brick stamps, combine to identify the buildings found as the Theatrum Neronis witnessed in ancient sources.
