The Capitoline Council has given its green light to a resolution, proposed by Roma Capitale’s Culture Councillor Miguel Gotor, approving the final design of a new excavation lot in the area of Caesar’s Forum. Thus, new excavations will soon begin in the area of the Imperial Forums.
The project is a continuation of the investigations begun in 2021-2022 with the support of theAcademy of Denmark, which financed the first intervention and awarded the tasks of preparing the feasibility study and final design of the second one. The cost amounts, for this second phase, to 900 thousand euros.
With this new intervention, the area of the former Via Bonella (now disappeared), on the eastern side of the Forum of Caesar, on the part that lies at the edge of the sidewalk of Via dei Fori Imperiali, will be investigated, with the excavation of what were the cellars and underground rooms of the dwellings of the Alessandrino district, demolished in the 1930s, up to the ground level of the Forum. A large sector of Caesar’s Forum will thus be brought to light, which can then be included in the tour route. The excavations will bring to light portions of the eastern portico of the square with the goal of improving the accessibility and enjoyment of the Forum of Caesar area by creating new pathways.
“The approval of this project makes possible a new fundamental excavation of the area of the Forums,” said Roma Capitale Culture Councillor Miguel Gotor. “This is an important opportunity to discover another piece of our city’s history and to make significant new archaeological evidence visible,” he concluded.
