As of June 20, 2023, theSacred Area of Largo Argentina, one of the most fascinating archaeological areas in the historic center of Rome, reopens to the public with a new itinerary that for the first time gives the possibility to access and visit the site in a systematic way, reading its phases of life from the Republican age through the imperial and medieval periods, until its rediscovery in the last century with the demolitions of the 1920s. The work was conducted under the scientific direction of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and was made possible thanks to the Maison Bulgari.
The interventions were carried out paying attention to criteria that made the site easily accessible to all. From Via San Nicola de’ Cesarini, visitors will be able to get off and visit the archaeological area thanks to a walkway route that is completely barrier-free. An elevating platform allows access to people with reduced mobility, while inside all height differences and jumps have been eliminated, making it easy to visit even in a wheelchair or with strollers.
New are the two exhibition areas in the portico of the medieval Papito Tower and in the rooms below street level on Via di San Nicola de’ Cesarini. The spaces have been set up with a selection of the many finds from the excavations and demolitions of the last century, including fragments of epigraphs, sarcophagi, architectural decorations and two colossal statue heads belonging to deities worshipped in the area. To better tell the story of the site and the transformations that have taken place over the centuries, the entire tour is equipped with a series of illustrative panels with texts in Italian and English and a wealth of photographs.
For visually impaired and blind people, two large tactile panels have been created in Italian, English and Braille with indications of the entire complex and individual monuments and with tactile reading of two 3D-scanned artifacts: a fragment of slab with bird pecking a fruit and the colossal head of female cult statue.
New lighting was installed on the entire walkway and displays located in the museum space, while at street level the portico of the Papito Tower was illuminated.
