A Roman necropolis dating back to the first century AD has emerged in Coccanile di Copparo, in the province of Ferrara.

In fact, the first excavation campaign of the necropolis of Viarolo Est, conducted by the Soprintendenza, under the scientific direction of Chiara Guarnieri, with the support of the Gruppo Archeologico Ferrarese led by professional archaeologists Flavia Amato and Marco Bruni, ended a few days ago. The excavation allowed the discovery of about fifteen incineration burials dated to the first century AD.

Made in simple pits dug into the ground, the burials were partly damaged by agricultural workings, but allowed the recovery of many grave goods, including terracotta oil lamps and glass balsamware. The site had already been investigated in 2019, and on that occasion an important road junction was found, testifying to a transit route through the ancient Delta area. The excavation will continue next season to check for additional burials. In fact, that of Viarolo Est seems to be one of the largest necropolis investigated in the Ferrarese territory.

“Also on this occasion, the Copparo municipal administration has not failed to support the implementation of the project ’The Viarolo a Roman villa, a centurial road and a necropolis in Coccanile di Copparo,’ which aims at the continuation of the excavation work and recovery of archaeological material,” the municipality explains. “As part of the ’Settembre Copparese’ the first results of the archaeological investigations will be illustrated to the public in order to increasingly involve the citizenry in the rediscovery of their buried past.”
