In the Archaeological Park of Pompeii on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, in the presence of Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, Director General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture Massimo Osanna and Director General of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the House of the Vettii, which has not been accessible for years due to the restoration work it needed, will reopen to the public.
Among the richest and most famous houses in Pompeii, the House of the Vettii is under the protection of Priapus god of prosperity, who can be seen depicted to the right of the door, symbolizing the economic prosperity of the owners, the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, freedmen who became rich through trade. The latter had it restored and enriched it with a garden with statues, fountains, and water features.
The most richly decorated rooms overlook the peristyle, among them the hall with a frieze of Amorini carrying out the main productive activities of the time, from selling wine to cleaning clothes, from growing flowers to harvesting, from goldsmithing to perfume making. In the kitchen area is the painted lararium; in the adjoining room, decorated with a series of erotic paintings, the prostitute Eutychis, a slave who offered herself for two aces, carried out her activities, as told by a graffito at the entrance to the house.
Already in 1995, the house had undergone interventions; it was reopened in 2016, only to be closed after three years for restorations that affected the roofing but also the paintings.
