Nola’s Roman amphitheater will become accessible to the public again. The Superintendence for the Naples metropolitan area has undertaken new excavation and securing activities in the archaeological area. The new excavations represent the first intervention in a new project that aims to recover the entire amphitheater and make the area, which also includes the walls, accessible to the public. Superintendence staff do not rule out the possibility that more discoveries may come to light.
The ongoing work will return the area to its ancient appearance with the removal of contemporary structures that have covered the site.
“The current intervention allows to deepen the knowledge of the Amphitheater and to consider the possibility of new excavation, restoration and enhancement works of the entire archaeological area located in the Municipality of Nola,” explains the Superintendent for the Naples Metropolitan Area, Mariano Nuzzo. “The Metropolitan Superintendent’s Office will work in the coming months on the realization of an overall project, which will make it possible to estimate the necessary resources and the timing of the works, thanks also to the preparation of a specific management program for the activities.”
At the end of the current intervention, it will be possible to observe the tufa steps of the northern cavea, with the vaulted corridors that allowed access, and the interior of the city walls, marked by buttresses at regular intervals.
Known since the 16th century as the Brick Amphitheater, the ancient edifice was among the monumental building works that were constructed in the context of a major northward expansion of the ancient urban center, following the dedication of a colony of Roman citizens, promoted by Sulla, after the conquest of the city shortly after 80 BC.
