Important discovery in Trieste: pre-Roman archaeological remains on San Giusto Hill

Important discovery in Trieste: pre-Roman remains were found on San Giusto Hill during work to replace old pipelines.

In Trieste, some archaeological remains have been discovered during work to replace old pipelines on San Giusto hill. Checks by the Superintendence revealed one of the most important finds in recent decades, testifying to the presence of pre-Roman settlements in the area of the hill.

Based on the compulsory Archaeological Impact Assessment for all public works, the Superintendency had prescribed exploratory surveys and continuous surveillance by specialized archaeological company for these gas, water and power network rehabilitation and modernization works.

In recent days, a number of relevant finds have been unearthed in Cathedral Square, where technicians from Archeotest srl, commissioned by AcegasApsAmga, have identified a hearth dating back to the Protohistoric age that would confirm the thesis of a settlement on the San Giusto castle in pre-Roman times. According to archaeologists at the site, this is the most important find in recent decades.

Thus, a completely new and unprecedented stratigraphic sequence was discovered for the area: an arrangement of stones of different shapes and sizes and with a north-south trend in connection with a circular area, burned by fire and partly covered by an accumulation of ash. The characteristics of the context allow us to assume the presence of a structure made of perishable materials, probably a hut with a hearth in the center. A second trampling level, identified immediately north of this one and related to the ash, could indicate multiple levels of frequentation of the same structure.

The ceramic materials (particularly wall fragments) found within this stratigraphic sequence can be attributed to a period between the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age (9th-6th centuries B.C.)
