As part of excavations in the archaeological area of theancient Este delizia of Belfiore, anancient hydraulic basin made with mortar and earthenware and connected to an ancient hydraulic pipeline with glazed terracotta ’tubuli’ to give impermeability was discovered in recent days. The tank came to light in the excavation essay north of the affected area; several fragments of pottery were also found inside, which are being analyzed. “Within the area affected by the project,” explains coordinator Chiara Guarnieri, “a complex network of foundations is increasingly emerging. The masonry intersection bears witness to different historical phases and would correspond, in its most recent phase, to the reconstruction of Aleotti’s famous plan.” In addition to archaeologists, archaeobotanists and archaeozoologists will soon enter the field for material analysis. “The Belfiore area,” Guarnieri emphasized, “is increasingly proving to be a treasure chest of discoveries and confirms the good preservation of the finds, which holds very useful elements to confirm and expand the knowledge we possess about the history and the ancient monumental residence.”
The site at the center of the discovery is located at the end of Corso Ercole I d’Este. Until 1632, the ancient Este delight stood here, then disappeared following a fire.
The find was discovered by students of the fifth G of the Roiti High School, as part of the participatory archaeology project supported by the Municipality of Ferrara, which has allocated about 40,000 euros for three years of activities, with the Superintendency, the Ferrara Archaeological Group (GAF) and with the collaboration of the Province and the Land Reclamation Consortium. The discovery will be presented during guided tours of the archaeological area that will kick off Saturday, October 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with departures every half hour and meeting in front of the main entrance of Roiti High School (Via Giacomo Leopardi 64). In case of bad weather the visit will not be held. Welcoming visitors to the excavation will be GAF President Letizia Bassi. Instead, the tour will be illustrated by Flavia Amato and Maurizio Molinari, archaeologists.
