Near Mit Raineh, about thirty kilometers from Cairo, statues dating back to the reign of Ramesses II have been found during excavation work.
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities made the announcement. “Pink and black granite statues dating to the era of Ramesses II and limestone blocks from the Coptic period.”
Mustafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Archaeology, said that in addition to the statues of Ramesses, statues depicting ancient Egyptian deities were also found. These include Sekhmet daughter of Ra, god of the Sun, worshipped as a deity of war and depicted with the head of a lioness; Ptah, a creator deity associated with artisans and architects; and Hathor, goddess of love and beauty.
Waziri added that excavations will continue until the area is fully examined.
