Archaeologist by chance in Latina: bather discovers part of an ancient Roman amphora

In Latina, a bather came across the neck of an ancient Roman amphora that would appear to date back to the second century B.C. The find was turned over to the Coast Guard for all necessary verifications.

In recent days, on the left side of the Latina waterfront, just past Capo Portiere, a bather came across while walking on the shoreline the neck of a Roman amphora that would appear to date back to the second century B.C.

The man alerted the nearest lifeguard, one of the lifeguards from the Blue Work Service Cooperative, who then handed the find over to the Coast Guard in order to have all the necessary checks carried out. Taking charge of the amphora was Commander Samuel Sasso.

According to initial findings, it would be the neck of aDressel 2-4 amphora, apparently dating from between the 1st and 2nd centuries BC.

Perfectly well preserved, the find would thus have arrived on the Pontine beach probably carried by currents in the night. Generally this type of amphorae was anciently used to transport wine, oil and other goods by sea along the trade routes that skirted Italy.

A second fragment apparently compatible with the features of a Roman amphora would have been found instead a few days after the first find. Suggesting a possible connection between the two finds is not only the narrow time frame, but also the same area of the Latina waterfront, namely that of section “B” between Capoportiere and Rio Martino, between steps 6 and 7. Again, the find was handed over by one of the cooperative’s lifeguards to the Coast Guard for all appropriate verifications.
