Turin, company donates important portrait of Charles Emmanuel IV of Savoy to Reggia di Venaria

Important donation for the Reggia di Venaria: the firm Jacobacci&Partners, has donated the portrait of Charles Emmanuel IV of Savoy by Giovanni Antonio Panealbo to the museum. The Reggia can thus augment the important gallery of dynastic portraits of the Savoy family with a king that was missing.

An important donation for the Reggia di Venaria: the Turin-based company Jacobacci&Partners, a leading European firm in the field of patent and intellectual property protection, has in fact donated to the museum a Portrait in Majesty of Charles Emmanuel IV of Savoy, a work by Giovanni Antonio Maria Panealbo (Turin, 1742 - 1815). It is a significant painting that, on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, Jacobacci&Partners intended to pay tribute to the Reggia, which can thus increase its collection of works dedicated to the Savoy period present in the permanent visitor path. The donation was presented this week.

In this painting, King Charles Emmanuel IV of Savoy (Turin, 1751 - Rome, 1819), the last sovereign to have stayed at the Reggia di Venaria, is shown full-length wearing “in Majesty,” probably the last Savoy portrait of this kind from the Old Regime, relating to the heir who was king of Sardinia for only a few years: from the death of his father Victor Amadeus III, in October 1796, until his abdication in June 1802, but in fact only until December 1798, when he was forced to leave Piedmont, and the Palace of Venaria, as a result of the French occupation (and for this he was called “the Exile”).

Ideally, this painting completes the series of full-length dynastic portraits in the Sottogalleria (Room 2), on loan to the Reggia from the Castle of Racconigi, where a dozen paintings are attributed to the Turin painter Panealbo, a pupil of Charles Francis Beaumont, but in which the very image of Charles Emmanuel IV is missing. The portrait is placed in dialogue with the prestigious portrait of Victor Amadeus II in majesty by Martin van Meytens displayed in the Queen’s Circle Room (Room 31) and with the full-length portrait of Charles Emmanuel III by Giuseppe Duprà on the opposite wall.

Guido Curto, Director General of the Consortium of the Royal Residences of Savoy, said, “I sincerely thank Jacobacci&Partners on behalf of President Michele Briamonte, the entire Board of Directors and myself as Director for this valuable donation that contributes to further enriching our collection of portraits dedicated to the Savoy family: a laudable initiative that testifies at the same time to the trust and credibility that the Reggia fortunately also enjoys with entities and institutions with cultural patronage intentions.”

“The donation of the portrait of Charles Emmanuel IV to the Reggia di Venaria,” says Enrica Acuto Jacobacci, Vice President of Jacobacci & Partners, is an important step in the celebration of Jacobacci & Partners’ 150th anniversary and its collaboration with the Reggia di Venaria. For us, art is a precious heritage, to be shared. That’s why we created a corporate collection, displayed in Jacobacci offices throughout Europe, and celebrated our anniversary with a photographic exhibition, 150 Years of Homage to Ingenuity, which makes the works that Mario Cresci created for us visible to all. Today, this donation is a confirmation of our commitment to promote and share art with the public, as Panealbo’s work will permanently complement the residence’s collection of Savoy sovereigns and be available to all."
