Siena, precious gold reliquary of St. Galgano found, stolen in 1989

The precious reliquary of St. Galgano, a 14th-century work of goldsmithing stolen in 1989, has been found. It will be officially returned on Monday.

The precious reliquary of St. Galgano, an important gold, silver and enamel masterpiece made in the early 14th century by an unknown maker known as the “Master of Frosini,” has been found: the work, from the abbey of San Galgano, had been stolen in 1989 (along with other works) from a room in the archbishop’s seminary in Montarioso, on the outskirts of Siena, in what was probably a commissioned theft as part of which several sacred goods (a 12th-century processional cross, a 14th-century gilded copper reliquary, five silver chalices from different eras, and two silver and gilded copper pyxes) were plundered. The Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d’Elsa-Montalcino announced the discovery yesterday afternoon.

The work will be officially returned to the Archdiocese of Siena on Monday, April 26, at 3 p.m., during a press conference in the Archbishop’s Palace in Siena at which the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice will be present; the Commander of the Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale Roberto Ricciardi, the director of the Vatican Museums Barbara Jatta, the Commander of the Carabinieri Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in Palermo Gianluigi Marmore, art historians Alessandro Bagnoli and Elisabetta Cioni both professors at the University of Siena. The prefect of Siena, Maria Forte, the provincial commander of the Carabinieri in Siena, Nicola Ferrucci, the president of the province Silvio Franceschelli, the superintendent of Siena, Arezzo and Grosseto Andrea Muzzi and the mayors of Siena, Chiusdino and Monteriggioni, Luigi De Mossi, Luciana Bartaletti and Andrea Frosini, respectively, will also be present.
